The North was economically exploiting the South...
The South wanted strong states rights, North wanted federal control.
Slavery was less of an issue as people want to say, it was important to the Abolitionist (religious aspect) and the Africans...but it was not THE cause of the war as many think.
When the Constitution was ratified, each state had to agree to be a part of the Union. The Southern states wanted out of the deal because the Union was not respecting their State sovereignty.
It makes you wonder why in a "free" country a state cannot elect to disagree again and reinstitute its own sovereignty?
The Union was no longer being held by agreement of the sovereign citizens of the states, rather by the force of the rich and political.
This is really when The United States became the empire it was never meant to be.

Well, not only did the North argue with the South over the morality of slavery, but they also didn't like slavery because it set the South at an advantage. Also, the book Uncle Tom's Cabin was a very influential book about the cruelty of slavery. When it was published and widely distributed, the South felt that the North was just being cruel to them. The book was said (by the American Pagaent textbook) to have been something that definately helped start the civil war. A lot was sectionalism, since the different sections had different ideas of the best values for the country

LONG ANSWER, JUST STUDIED IT but here is a quick summary.
North and South had always been different. North was more into manufacturing while the south was more agrarian. Politically the north favored a strong central government while the south wanted to decentralize power to the states. the south and the north had always hated each other and the Civil War was pretty much inevitable. As the nation expanded westward, more lands entered the US but they entered as free states which made the south even more mad at the north. Thus, when Lincoln was elected to the presidency he promised to stop any exapnsion of slavery. this made South Carolina and the rest of the south finally decide that it was finally time to leave the union in late 1860.
There is a lot more but that is the gist of it.

The Civil War was caused by many things . The South and the North had different views on states rights . The states wanted to be controlled by someone from their State not from on State . The war had nothing to do with slavery in the start of the war . The war started on April 12, 1861 at Fort Sumter .

The immediate political cause was the election of Lincoln. As soon as he was elected, states set in motion their declarations of succession.
The issue of states' rights versus Federal rights was another political difference between the two regions. The Confederacy constituion would differ from the US Constitution in establishing states' rights more firmly.
The Constitution accepts the practice of slavery and actually codifies the institution.
As for economics, the South and North had different economies. The South was primarily agricultural--with cotton its main crop--and supported by slavery. The North was industrial and without slaves.
Religious--both sides were Christian and could quote the Bible to justify their positions. In fact the Bible makes many references to slavery as if the practice were acceptable, and there are no passages in the Bible out-and-out against slavery.

i would say that the main cause of the civil war was the conflict over how much power states had in the federal government...the south believed that states should be able to have more power and make more of their own laws (especially regarding slavery). the north thought that the us government should have more power over the states. the south rebelled not just because the north wanted to outlaw slavery (which would have wrecked their economy), but to fight for what they saw as the survival of their independant state status.
yes, i know i am a complete nerd.

The main cause of all wars is Economics and then the other reasons build from there. Why? Because money is always the issue in any fight.

It was mostly due to controversy over states' rights. But there were other causes, as well- the abolition of slavery, economic issues, etc.
But as far as I know, there were no religious causes, per se.
