In New Jersey a person convicted of his first drunk driving offense faces a mandatory suspension of his license for six months, and the possibility of a thirty-day jail sentence. In addition, the offender must pay a mandatory fine of $250 and a $100 fee to support law enforcement efforts to catch other drunk drivers. Convicted drunk drivers are also required to undergo a minimum of 12 hours counseling for which they must pay a $1,000 surcharge for each of three years, as well as $50 a day. In addition, drunk drivers receive 9 “insurance points” that could subject them to huge increases in their insurance premiums. The total cost for a first offense of drunk driving in New Jersey probably exceeds $9,000. Please explain and analyze your response

Well, the penalty is heavy ... but FAIR!

Yes, the drunk driver loses his license, has to pay fines and surcharges amounting to several thousand dollars, and sees a huge increase in insurance costs.

Now look at it from the other driver's point of view. This driver is doing nothing wrong, driving while sober, in the correct lane and in full control of their body and vehicle. The drunk's car comes into their lane and there is a collision.

The sober driver's car is damaged (sometimes beyond repair, he/she may be injured, perhaps with permanent damages). This driver suffers from the crime of DWI ... without committing the crime! Worst case scenario, an innocent person loses their life to the crime of DWI.

You know the penalty for DWI in NJ ... now you have a decision to make, drink and drive anyway (then whine about the costs) or do the smart thing and stay sober on the road!

The penalty for DWI is very heavy, but VERY avoidable! Don't drink and drive

If one is stupid enough to drive drunk, they deserve the most severe fine the State will hand down to the criminal upon conviction. The penalties might not be harsh enough.

Sounds more than fair to me. If someone chooses to drive drunk, and endanger everyone on the road, he obviously has poor decision-making abilities and needs to be taught better skills.

Sounds cheap to me, how much is another persons life worth.
Drunk drivers kill more Americans every year than die in Iraq every year.
