response: I'm not so sure the issues of 1861 don't bear at least *some* similarity to 2008. I mean, red states/blue states? c'mon, isn't that part of it at least obvious?

It is very true. All of us myself included should respect peoples beliefs. Whether we agree or not just try to understand that every political belief has been formed by ones own life experiences. How often does a truly poor person become rich or a ubber rich person become poor. I think those would be the only people who can have a true unbiased opinion on the Govt. If a majority can agree on 1 goal for our country and work together to reach it, I think that may be a good start. Red, Blue... Lets become a strong Purple.

The quote is "A house divided against itself cannot stand", and it remains relevant today. But the nature and extent of the division is crucial; we have nothing today at all similar to the situation that prevailed in 1861.

Seems to smack of...what is that new mantra...oh yeah 'Multi-Culturism'. In the past Americans assimilated into a homogoneus American People that is no longer true today. Every one wants to multi cultural and not assimilate into a people.
