The principal feature of American liberalism is sanctimoniousness. By loudly denouncing all bad things—war and hunger and date rape—liberals testify to their own terrific goodness. More important, they promote themselves to membership in a self-selecting elite of those who care deeply about such things.... It’s a kind of natural aristocracy, and the wonderful thing about this aristocracy is that you don’t have to be brave, smart, strong or even lucky to join it, you just have to be liberal

It is symptomatic of, but still an oversimplification of, the cacophony of dilemmas mankind faces today.
Americans, IN PARTICULAR, have got to get their heads out of the dirt, and into the books. We've got to evolve. We need to realize that things in our world today are occuring at an exponential rate: population growth, global pollution, and resource crunches, to name a few.
If this PLANET has any hope of surviving the next hundred years, people, as ONE people, have got to learn to think exponentially. We have to be able to think about ALL these issues, not just one or two.
On a related note, I might add that the Democrats aren't really doing any better than Repubs on this matter. Everyone is stuck in the 20th century. It's the 21st, though, and it's time to wake up. Red, blue, yellow or purple. We are all fundamentally the same, and we are all fundamentally threatened.

Causes for what? Environmentally, sociologically, politically?
The left's platforms of ideas are wide and many. I pick my causes not because of affiliation, but because of what I feel as best. And I happen to fall more on the left than right.

They are typical of individuals that will turn over their own freedom and power to government for "free" handouts. They do not wish to be responsible for their on welfare or their own actions.
Once government provides all their needs, government will have all the power.
Power corrupts.
THAT is TYRANNY.
