Depends from where in San Jose to where you want to go. Usually I prefer I-280, which is faster compared to 101 and then merger onto 101 near SFO.

kind of depends on what part of san jose. South San jose to SF would probably take a little more than 1 hour (without traffic) while west san jose would probably take about 45 mins.

Your question is a bit vague. How old are the children? Do you live in SF or SJ? If you are not from SF, I would recommend for your family to drive to SF. There are lots of things to do for any age child and adult. For example, Alcatraz Tours and the SF Tour are good for all ages. Fisherman's Wharf has a small arcarde, shops, restaurants, and silly things like street performers. Younger children may prefer the small museum at the Yerba Buena Center 1 block past Sony Metereon (Sony's Flagship store and movie theater). If SF is not your choice, you can always drive up a bit more and visit Muir Woods, Marin Headlands for a nice hike, or to some of the smaller cities on that part of CA. For older kids, they usually enjoy the hippie style stores in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood or the Castro has unique, funny, and very expressive shops. Overall SF has lots to do for almost any age.

It's also an hour if you take the baby bullet using Caltrain. It brings you just a few block from downtown!
