They are under the impression that if you strongly disagree with the president, as is your right since this is not a dictatorship, you must hate America.
Same thing goes if you do not support the war in Iraq.

When will they learn that resentment towards the president DOES NOT EQUAL resentment towards the country?
Do they think that our president IS America? I just don't understand their misguided way of thinking.

There is a really basic answer I could give to this. That just they don't want to hear a difference of opinion. I wonder if there is more to it than that though.

Why would you not want to hear the other side of an argument? If you had a vested interest in winning the argument you'd want to silence dissent. If you believe there can be no compromise then you'd probably want to stomp out difference of opinion as well. The former is aligned with business interests and the latter is the result of a weak argument and just wanting to be right. Are there more choices than these? These two are all I can really make a case for. If that's all that there is then, we should put a large crimp on lobbying. That way at least we can get rid of the shill component.

Polite disagreement generally doesn't evoke feelings as strong as hatred. There's certainly some extreme emnity between the fringes on the right and left, but I don't think it's as simple as 'disagreement.' These are people who are so personally vested in thier political ideaolgy (be it border line fascist or virtually communist), that anything other than unwavering support for thier ideal seems like a personal attack to them. They percieve any disagreement as 'hate' and respond in kind.

We don't hate everyone who disagrees with us, we just hate stuck up liberals! Have you ever argued with a liberal democrat.. ..Who shouts down the president when he's trying to speak? LIBERALS! Who makes up crazy theories to make everyone go green? Liberals! Who is trying to make sure I can't smoke anywhere...LIBERALS! Who raises taxes so they can spend MY money on what they see fit? LIBERALS! Who plants questions during democratic and republican debates? Wacky liberals. And lastly though I could go on FOREVER, Who Hasn't come through on ANY of their promises? The democrat controlled congress!

Thank you for allowing me to release some Pelosi rage. If you would like to argue anytime I will always listen...Because I'm a REPUBLICAN ( we are always willing to listen)

I am a conservative, and I don't hate anyone.

It is your right to say what you want, or state your own opinion. I served in the military for 20 years on that belief.

The American conservatives are like that. They didn't use to be. But remember the democrats were like that in the 90s and early 2000s. If you didn't support their cause you were branded as a racist or not politically correct. This is just the American mentality.

Steve has hit the nail on the head. Sad thing is that the same would probably be true for whatever party is in control.

Selfishness is just part of being a Republican. They are intolerant, close minded, and think if you don't want to help the president kill people in a foreign country you must not be much of an American.
