Because he had a "God complex." He wanted to do what only the Supreme Creator can do - create life.
The ancient Greeks called this feeling "hubris" (Greek: hybris), and it has been responsible for many tragedies.
Trying to rival God is probably not a good idea.

Partly to see if he could, but mostly because he was wicked upset about his mom dying giving birth to Willie, and he wanted to see if he could have found a way to save her.
