should i play Prophecies, Factions, or Nightfall?

Well it depends on your personal preference.
Factions - Mainly takes place in an Asian setting. You go from an island to a mainland meaning the game gets a lot harder, and it contains the 6 core professions and 2 other. The storyline is OK....not great.
Nightfall - Mainly takes place in an African setting. You go from an island to a mainland and it gets a lot harder as well. This game contains 1 of the best professions, this game is where everyone makes money. It contains heroes, which help you a lot. The storyline is the most boring.
Prophecies - Takes place in a lot of settings including a wasteland, a medieval Europe setting, a desert, a jungle, an almost Mediterranean setting, and freezing mountains. This game has no extra professions. Since this was the first game, the difficulty progresses. It has the best storyline.

erm you need prophecies for factions and nightfall. You should begin in Propheices because the monsters dont jump 20 lvls after the start

You can buy whichever one appeals to you. They are all stand alone games. I'd recommend Prophecies since it was the first game. If you enjoy the game, you'll probably want to buy all 3 anyways.
