The NFL world is vastly different from the college game. That word, game, just might be the key word. In the NFL it is not a game, it is a business. Successful college coaches rarely succeed at the next level. I don't think that a college guy is prepared for the commitment necessary to succeed in the pros and that the difference between coaching men and leading boys is overwhelming. An NFL assistant has a better understanding of the whys and wherefores necessary to satisfy the owners and fans at the top level of football where winning is everything.

although the game is pretty much the same, the players and the relationship between coach and player is very different...in college, the coach has total authority over the players, but not so in the pros....if a player has a gripe about the coach and goes to management, who do you think is going to be gone??? college players work hard to get to the next level or the coach can sit them, but if you try and sit someone that is being paid 10 mil a year, you wont have a job long...also in college you can go out and get the players you want...in the pros its pretty much up to the GM and owner

Well, its a different style, college players want a leader, somebody to follow, pros want someone who knows what the hell he's doing. Those sound like similar statements, but theyre not.
Also, playcalling is TOTALLY different. I remembered seeing Spurrier call these odd formations, with just the center and guards and the tackles were spread away from the ball, it was like "huh? what the hell is that?". Petrino left cuz he knows he's never gonna coach Vick, he has no recievers, Alge Crumpler is like HOW old, and his defense can't stop the run. Saban is just a douchebag, he can't sit still for one minute (sorta like the football version Larry Brown) and he's not a man of his word. Oh yea, and the Dolphins also sucked.

Being good in College =/= a good NFL coach.
Hell, being a Heisman winner =/= NFL star
College and the NFL are 2 totally different challenges.

The NFL and collage are completley different when it comes to coaches. In the NFL you have the same guys for years, you are not the only leader of the team(owner), and many of your players are playing for money and not passion. In collage you have to go scout players you want to come, have to control your whole team, and players leave every year.
It is true that most coaches that go from one to the other do not work out becuase they are good at 1 of them.

Most of the time it is because that a coach that jumps from college to the NFl - usually doesn;t get a team with alot of talent on them - you think the Steelers or the Chargers were going to trust their playoff calibar teams to someone with no coaching experience. There are a few exceptions like Barry Switzer landing the loaded Cowboy team.

last one is nick saban. but i believe the answer is that the NFL is a better job then a college team. some college coaches cannot adjust to the NFL (like the 3 you mentioned above) that is why they go back to college.

There are 32 jobs in the NFL and 113 in college. The ones you mentioned didn't have sucess at those places, so they needed a new job, and found one in college.

There is a commonality amongst your examples: they sucked as pro coaches. That makes a big difference.
