To elaborate and add to the answers above this one. Yes, the Baby-Boom was a major factor in the population growth of the developed countries (Canada, USA, Britain, Germany, Australia, etc). However, at the same time there was another factor, a factor that is much bigger than the baby-boomers.

The Green Revolution.

The green revolution began in the 1940's and brought agricultre into the industrialized world. Crop yields expanded, arable land expanded, and food became more abundant, and not to just the developed world, to the world in general. This lowered malnutrition and starvation rates, increased life expectancies around the world. Healthy people make babies, sick ones don't.

The real answer is two-folded. It was the baby-boom and the green revolution combined that set the stage for a population boom.

Hope that helps.

The population went through a baby boom after WW2 ended. It was still going strong through the beginning of the 1950s. We will probably have another one after any major war ends in the future. Hippies weren't popular until the 1960s

The reason for the baby boom was because of the return of many husbands to the U.S. after fighting in WW2. The husband and wife were so happy to be together again that they got busy, if you know what I mean.
