The free calendars, notepads, and address stickers they send you are just a ploy to get you to reciprocate, by relying on the kindness of the human spirit. How ethical is this? Do you feel any guilt--even a twinge--if you never reciprocate?

A lot of charities are businesses masquerading as charities (good tax breaks). Some charities are so stuck on their cause that they will do anything (including unethical things) to promote their cause. A lot of charities pay their employees large salaries and give them bonuses based on how much they raise - tsk tsk shame on them, that is NOT charitable.

So yes, 'free' gifts are a tacky and deceitful practice that belongs in the business world (the hard-core do anything to succeed business world that I want no part of) and not the charity world.

Its really too bad that some 'charities' think that they have to be so aggressive in order to serve their apparant needs, hiding the fact that there are some genuine charities out there that don't stoop to these lowbrow, guilt inducing stunts.

Like the other esteemed answerer said, why don't they just give the carrot seeds (or the 'free gift') to those who need it in the first place.

You left out the greeting cards.

At first, I'd send a donation. Then I'd feel guilty when I didn't send any money. Now, I just ignore it all.

Why don't they just save the money, or have the companies who are donating these annoying things give the money instead to the charity directly?
