Limewire is safe, what is not safe is the P2P files that you download/upload. Any file downloaded can contains trojans, spyware, malware, trackware, spyware rogue dialers. I don't have anything to do with P2P. If it is possible, I would recommned that you download all files to save. Then scan them with your antivirus/antispyware, to make sure they are clean before installing into your system.
Plus some files are "copyright protected", and these files can get you into serious criminal trouble.

Disclaimer: I don't use Limewire. I don't like it. I prefer other p2p clients. Having said that, I just want to clear up a couple of misconceptions that seem to be circulating.
1. limewire does not contain malware or spyware
2. limewire, downloaded from http://www.limewire.com does not contain viruses
3. when you use limewire you are linking to a bunch of unknown sources to download files. Common sense will tell you that if you don't know where its come from you don't know how safe it is. SO, if you are using Limewire (or any peer to peer software, fir that matter) make sure you have a good up to date virus scanner and SCAN everything you download before you run it.
4. Using Limewire or any other peer to peer software to transfer files that are copyright protected is illegal in just about every country. There are risks (small but real) of prosecution if using it for this purpose.
Apart from that, yes, its pretty safe to use.

limewire is safe
But
1.makes a hole in your firewall (if you download a trojan)
2.is REALLLY Slow
3.is really a rip off to pay $20 for a bittorrent client
(download utorrent or bitcomet and visit a site like mininova.org ,The piratebay, Demonoid)
ask how to download torrents here on YA you'll like it.

Not too safe. I got several spyware from there and yeah. Just don't bother downloading .exe files and use your common sense if you want to download your music.

technically, it's not all that safe. there are viruses everywhere; however, you can easily tell if something is a virus if it seems ridiculously small
