My bf and I have been dating 3 years (we're both in our late 20s.) For the past 2 years he's gone home with me to visit my family (and didn't bring them gifts or anything). This year he's going home as am I, but I am flying to spend New Years with his family. I haven't sent them a gift yet and cannot decide rather to or not. I sent them a gift basket last year for and my guy didn't even get anything for my family as we opened presents on Christmas morning (and all of my family members got him something.) However, I was raised to "know better" than to show up empty handed. What should I do?

My feelings are that if you and your bf have dated for 3 years his parents are probably going to be your in-laws one day. A gift basket or such would be fine. I don't feel what the gift is matters as much as showing the recepient you are thinking of them.

I think if I was you I would get a small something as a gesture as you say you was raised to know better and I think you would feel better by getting something as you would feel that you was on the right side of the situation.

Could you suggest that you both go shopping to get a small something for each others parents or family?

I would get them something. Like a basket of cookies or something that won't be too expensive but will be thoughtful. Even though he;s not able to consider your family like that, it doesn't mean you can't.

Plus, you can always mention to his family while they chow down on your great cookies how he looks great in the sweater "your" grandma got him and then drop a little hint how he never gets them anything....Hopefully then his family will lay into him about not being considerate and getting your family something!

Good luck!

Do what you are comfortable doing. If you were raised to think that you should get them something, by all means, do. In your situation, I certainly would.

You don't have to do anything big. A bottle of wine, a fruit basket, or a poinsetta or something would do just fine.

that's a cute idea to bring them a little something.

What about a seasonal decoration for their home, or a centrepiece or something cute, but christmasy? OR think over a few things they like, and purchase something like that.
It doesn't have to be extravagant, but it should be nice and good quality. Ask your boyfriend what kind of things they like, and then get them something along those lines.

Just get them something small, that way your not making a big deal about it, but your still doing the nice thing by giving them something. It's the best compromise I can think of.

At first I was going to say yes, but then i read the rest of your story. Hell no!!!! Does he at least help you pick out the gift for yours? Something you can courteously put both your names on the tag? If not, then no.
Girl, dont feel bad. Wrap the present he gets for his folks and sneaky put your name on it to. lol

Your boyfriend lacks good manners & thoughtfulness. Why don't you send them a Christmas floral arrangement, via Teleflora or FTD? They have so many pretty ones to choose from.

be the bigger person. i would take something to the get together for his family. he may have not been taught to give gifts the way you were. go with your upbringing and take them a little something. don't go overboard though. have fun and good luck!
