Glad to see that somebody is interested in learning to score by hand! It's almost a lost art these days!

Here's a great site:

A frame that starts with a strike is worth ten pins, plus the value of the next TWO balls you throw.

A spare is worth ten pins for that frame, plus the value of the next ONE ball you throw.

So, for example, you shoot 9/ in the first, and 8-1 in the second. The first frame is worth 18 (10 plus next ball 8). Write an "18" at the bottom of the first frame box. After two frames, the total score is 27 (9 in the second frame).

The best way to learn is by actually seeing how it works, so go to that link I gave you. It's great.

Great answer from NY bowler. Scoring is exactly as he said. It was great fun in the earlier days, when you had to keep score on a bowling sheet. Everyone on the team had his turn and was into the game much more than with the advent of the automatic scorers. I was partner in two bowling houses. When it looked as though we would have to install automatic scorers, the cost was prohibitive . We then sold the businesses to AMF.Made a handsome profit with no more headaches.
