Anti-Catholic animus in the United States reached a peak in the nineteenth century when the Protestant population became alarmed by the influx of Roman Catholic immigrants. The resulting "nativist" movement, which achieved prominence in the 1840s, was whipped into a frenzy of anti-Catholicism that led to mob violence, the burning of Roman Catholic property, and the killing of Roman Catholics. This violence was fed by claims that Catholics were destroying the culture of the United States. Irish Catholic immigrants were blamed for raising the taxes of the country as well as for spreading violence and disease. The nativist movement found expression in a national political movement called the Know-Nothing Party of the 1850s, which (unsuccessfully) ran former president Millard Fillmore as its presidential candidate in 1856. A similar sentiment was also expressed by the Ku Klux Klan.

America had only a small Catholic population prior to Irish Catholic immigration--and I believe alot of Irish came in a short time-- then quickly by German Catholics---Italian-- East europen Catholic nationalities--- These groups were not bad people but did change the face of America--and brought their own traditions and values----many of these traditions having a Catholic flavor---After about the mid 20th century they just seemed to blend in ok----and of course they voted and spent money etc---making it more palitable

the KKK was not very popular in the early 1920s but at first they were mostly against African Americans.Around that time The red scare was around which did not like communists or foreign immigrants. The KKK did that because they knew they would get more popular and gain more attention if they were against what everyone else was against at that time.

There were many that distrusted Catholics from old feuds back in England. (Bloody Queen Mary the Catholic that killed Protestants, etc.) Others felt that Catholics couldn't be trusted as Americans because they believed in the Pope instead of the President.

Everyone has their own level of ignorance, they just have an unatural amount of it. They claim to be "christians," but I don't remember reading about God chosing people he liked/disliked by race, gender preference, or religion or anything else in the bible.
