While this is an old question, I feel it still deserves to be answered in more detail. I personally work at a papa johns and have for a few months. The delivery fee DOES NOT go to the drivers, if you don't tip them, they get nothing from the run and they're already paid less than minimum wage when they're on the road. Delivery fee goes to the Papa Johns store to help pay for insurance to back the drivers as well as pay for the gas drivers use to deliver the pizzas. So while you still pay a delivery fee, it in no way goes to the driver personally, therefore the driver doesn't really get any gain from no tip.

Typically, I still tip if there is a delivery fee, but I just tip less than what I would if there wasn't a delivery fee. Normally depending on the order, I tip anywhere from $3-5, so at most I would tip your pizza dude $3.

The delivery driver gets an hourly wage and cash for each delivery made, so it depends on how friendly the person is, how large the order is, if my food is hot, order is correct, and the weather condition that he/she is driving in. I tip 10-15% before taxes generally. I don't tip depending on how fast they get to my place, because they do not make the pizza. If it is busy they still have to wait for someone else to make then give them the pizza to deliver.

As a delivery driver for Papa John's, I can tell you that no we do not get the delivery fee. We make minimum wage plus tips, which is where the bulk of our income comes from. We use our own vehicles and supply our own gas and insurance. Honestly, anything less than $5.00 is a cheap tip, when you consider that we are doing all the work for you. In some cases we are also taking your phone order as well as making the pizzas you get. Also, if a Pizza is late, not tipping or tipping poorly is unfair. Most of the time, it is not the Drivers fault. You have to consider the weather, how far away you live, the time of day, as well as the day of the week.

Don t tip if there s delivery fee.
Not sure why restaurant takes it if it doesn t go to drivers, but if driver isn t happy he should be looking for a different job where he can get paid more.

I can't remember which pizza place it was but I called them because the price was different than what I was told. They said it was the delivery fee. I said -- then, if you charge it, why should I tip --- they said the drivers don't get the "fee" they charge -- doesn't that suck???? I can't remember the excuse and it could have been Papa John's too.

Yes! You should. Most likely the fee does not go to the driver. Tip should be 10-20% depending on friendliness.

I thought this was to funny... lol..

3$ is average cost of gas per gal.
.This guy makes 7.00 $ an hour.
for all we know that 2.00 $ delivery fee is tagged on to the 7.00 hourly. lets say he makes 8 trip a night at no more then 2 miles one way. equaling 32 miles round trip.
that is an average of 2 gallons of gas in a economy car. if it is a piece of crap car that is 3 gallons.
so lets say 9$ was spent replacing the gas that day.
he works on average of 4 night a week @ 7$ an hour 140.00$ before tax.
122.00 after tax (estimated)
figure after 9$ a day in gas that is 36$ a week in gas.
86.00 $ is profit..
He would be lucky if that even covered the cost of car insurance.

In short I would seriously tip the man.

Cost of 1 large pizza with 3 toppings is about
14$ x 2 pizza's is 28.00$
+1.68 $ tax +2.00 $ delivery fee.
= 31.68 plus tip 3.00 = $ 34.68 out the door.

sorry for the length I had fun with this one. Hope you liked it.

;)
