there are nine side dishes. mary wants three different sides. how many combinations can she make? how do you solve this is it "9!"?

also...mary wants 2 out of 9 sides and 1 out of 3 main dishes. how many combinations are possible?

Well the other answer is surely wrong. How many sub sets are there when you have 10 items and need to have 3 items in a subset? Think about it.

9 x 8 x 7 choices or 9! - 6!

9 x 8 x 3 choices or 9! - 7! + 3! - 2!

9-2-4 = 3.
9-5-1 = 3
