if a woman lied to a man and told him he was the father of her child and that man raised the child as his own for 8 yrs only to find out the truth could he sue the woman for loss of finances and such?

No. The underlying act - lying about who the father was - happened eight years ago. The Statute of Limitations has LONG expired.

While in 'most' cases the SoL doesn't start until the bad act is discovered, paternity is not such a case as the truth "could" have been discovered back then if you'd just gone for a paternity test.

In "some" States you may still be able to have a paternity test and establish that you're not the father for child support purposes, but in most States the fact that you've acknowledged the child as your won for so long has made you legally his father even if you aren't biologically his.

Morally, of course, there's no question. You're the only Dad the kids ever known - are you going to try to cut him off right now because you aren't his biological father?

I'm with Terry G. Think more about the young, impressionable child than yourself. It isn't biology that makes a good parent. It's caring for the child without thinking about the cost or parentage. Sorry you were lied to, but don't make the problem worse. Just go on being a Dad to your son and get some couseling with his mother (your wife? girlfriend?) and heal the relationship. It can be done.

dont agree with some of the stupid answers on here. they are the jerks as terry wants to put it.
why should you not think about your self
after all at the end of the day if the child is not yours then the mother is free to up and leave town, find a new man, get married when ever she wants and you would not have a leg to stand on to see the child that you no doubt care so much about. yes try and get your finances back, why not, maybe it could go into funding your true child if or when you have another.

if a MAN raised a child as his own for 8 years he would not even ask this question. he would do whatever he needed to stay in the child's life after all he is the only father the child knows.

Yes he could if he could prove she actually lied. Even though the child does not belong to him he could even get visitation rights to the child if that is something he would want.

It is a very common occurrence. I think the man should think about his love for the child and don't let the deceit by a woman shake that love. OK maybe it did cost him financially but let the pain subside and think it out rationally. The child should not suffer because a mother told an untruth.
