Never heard of this so is probably an American custom or something? Personally if neighbours pop by I would do as my mum did and offer mince pies, a cup of tea/coffee, a drop of wine and sweets or something like that.

That sounds great. When I made cookies for my neighbors once I gave them twenty cookies (ten for each of them).

3 dozen and your neighbors will love them...but then you will have a reputation for making cookies (if they are good) and they will want them EVERY YEAR....
