Depending on what you are looking for and if you intend to use this car as your primary car. If you do, then a Miata is not the best choice.

Otherwise, I would take the Miata over the Civic SI anyday. There is a reason why there is a cult following for the Miata. The same might be said for the first gen Civic SI, but they have since fallen short of the mark. If you really want a nice and fast car, you should cross shop with the Mazdaspeed3 and the Subaru Impreze WRX as well. Both of those car offers something more than the Civic SI IMHO.

In stating the obvious one is a convertible, the other may have a sun roof. The Civic Si is fast, the Miata is quick. Assuming both are brand new, the Honda Si costs more, the Miata costs less. The Miata is more of a 2 season car, the Civic Si can be more of a 4 season car with the right tires. We know which one is more practical hands down. However, if you want to reward yourself....get the Mazda MX5. You only live once.

They are both great cars!! The Si Civics aren't available without a moonroof- They've always had them. Still I agree that the Miata would be a lot more fun to drive. They handle like they are on rails. The Si is quick but more practical and you have room for more passengers. Heck, do like the first answer said; Get one of each!!

My GF had a Miata when we started dating, and I really didn't like it because it was so small. I am only 5'9", but had to basically crawl into it because it sits so low. The first time I drove it I was in love...with the car anyway. She called it her zoom zoom, and that is what it did, zoom zoom everywhere. It was quick and handled well, but there is not room 'cause it is a 2 seater. And the gas mileage was awesome. The Si looks like it has more room. So it depends what you are looking for. Sporty-Miata, roomy-Si.

The Miata is more fun to drive. It has better handling. It is RWD so you could drift with it.
The Civic Si has a roof, it has more room and seats more. It is FWD so it is better in rain or snow.
Both cars are very reliable.

Miata, loved our first one so much, we bought a second (just in case).
Ours are first generations (1990) so I know parts will be hard to come by, and what could be better then two cars that all the parts interchange on?
(Bad habit I guess from my TR-4 days)

As an old mechanic, I got to fix a gang of them. Honda, Mazda, Toyota, they're all reliable. It's a toss-up. But Honda is like pushing a refrigerator down the street. I think they give a course in boredom. I have a Mazda.

Easy choice.

Do you want a sports car, or do you want a family sedan/coupe with a power boost and a semi-sport suspension?

Mazda reintroduced the roadster with the MX-5 Theyre killing it by making it heavier every year and focusing more on power than handling, but it still has its roots and is way more fun to drive than any family car pretending to be a sports car.

Buy them used, and get one of each!

Miata is more fun.

Civic is more practical.
