The grit in the dirt is likely dulling your chain plus I'll bet the angle you are sharpening your chain is wrong. A angle almost horizontal to the bar works much better than a pointy angle especially for hardwoods. When sharpening, it is important to give each tooth the same number of strokes which keeps the cutting edges the same. Then after about six sharppenings use a flat file and hit each drag about 5 good strokes.

ya its the dirt on it, and water , water makes the wood gum up, has to dry out .
