He's by far the best active defensemen (even better than Niedermeyer who's coming back), and is also very under-rated. People talk about Zetterberg but who is more responsible for the success of the Wings? I think he's one of the top 5 defencemen of all-time.

You're talking out of the wrong aperture there son. That one's just for releasing waste products. Come to think of it that's a good comparison to what you just said.

How can a guy who has won the Norris 5 times be under-rated?

And Lidstrom couldn't crack the top 10 in my books. What are you like 16? So you've seen maybe 8 years of hockey and most likely never played at a really high level if you played at all.

Man you Red Wing fans run your mouths but when the team tanks in the playoffs you disappear just like the Sens and Sabres fans. A real fan sticks around and knows what he's talking about.

You sir, can lay claim to neither.

Lidstrom is certainly one of the best defenceman of this generation.

I don't think he's top 5 all-time however (which explains why he didn't win any Norris Trophies when he was in his prime). he doesn't come close to touching Orr, Harvey, Bourque, or Shore, and there are a lot of people I know (several of whom are on the HOF committee) who put him behind people like Emile Bouchard, Allan Stanley, Brad Park, and Paul Coffey. Hell, he trails Reed Larson in points/game as a Red Wing. I would have loved to have seen Larson play for a winning Detroit team.

I think Nick is totally the best player in the NHL not just defensemen. Hank(Zetterberg) and Pav(Datsyuk) definitely help with the scoring, but I can think of countless times when Nick has been at the goal to deflect the puck away from an open net.

Like in Game 6 of Round 2 against the Sharks. Dom came out to play the puck and gave it right to the guy. Nick makes a diving save across the empty net with the shaft of his stick.

If that doesn't scream best player ever, I don't know what does!

Lidstrom is guaranteed a place in the Hall of Fame as one of the greatest defenders to grace the NHL, he is currently the best in the league at his job, which he makes look effortless

he is a legend!!

He probably is one of the best but right now, it's Lecavilier and Crosby and Zetterberg and Kovalchuk battling it out.

He's great. But not the greatest in the NHL.

That honor probably belongs to Lecavlier or Ovechkin.

If you had to credit the Wings success to one person (which is like impossible) it would have to be Osgood.

Lidstrom is great and certainly the best active D-man, but he isn't the best in the NHL. You could make a case for a few, but I think that Ilya Kovalchuk is the best & would be even better if he had a great passer like Lidstrom or Spezza to play with.

DY-wish I played fantasy against you LOL. Yeah, Lidstrom is the best Dman. Not player though. While he would be close on my top 5 all-time, I don't know if he would crack it, top 10 though.

YES! People hear my roar. Nick is the best overall player in the NHL. I ranked him #1 for all my fantasy pre-drafts just to make sure I got him. This guy remember had a superb rookie year, (1991-92; 80 games, 11 goals, 49 assists, + 36, 22 pims.) so we shouldn't be surprised that he is still a master.

I think Lidstrom is the best defenceman in the NHL but not necessary the best overall player in the league.
