No it's not bad. It's ok and it really does seal out the elements like rain and snow so no need to worry about rot.
Rule of thumb is $100.00 per square. A square is 10' x 10' area. Cost would include trim and accessories

Vinyl siding is excellent, what can I say. I've had it on several homes over the years and it sure beats having to paid stucco or other types of siding. Make sure you get one with a real good anti fade warranty as mine faded after 10+ years. Where I live we had baking heat a lot. You also have to pressure wash it about twice a year to keep it looking nice, just part of home ownership, I quite liked it.

It can be a bit heat-sensitive. I've seen at least two cases where heat from a barbecue caused melting.
Ants, bugs, can live or crawl underneath.
It can be hard to replace if you get an odd pattern.
An inexperienced contractor might not replace all the conduit supports on a feeder. I once saw a tree catch a power line and pull the conduit away - - *possibly* because conduit was not well supported after vinyl siding installed.

It is a decent low cost product. I would never put it on my house though, in fact I tore it off my house when I bought it. I found stucco in great shape under the vinyl siding.
I don't like how spiders and other bugs like to nest under it. The problem with fading is better than it was in the past but it is still a problem. I also don't like how with age it gets brittle, a large hail storm will crack it.
In many markets it actually detracts from the value of the house along with aluminum, steel, and cement board siding. I like cement board siding for it's fire/insect resistance.

Personally..i have seen it get "sun wore" over 5 years and become brittle and break easily, or small holes in it from accidently bumping it etcetera..if you do get it..buy the quality warrantied type.not the cheaper vinyl siding..and make sure to apply it when the moisture in the wood on the house is dry, and use styrafoam insulation under it

the only time you have problems with rot is if the siding is put on while the wall has moisture on it Like just after raining, or if it is not correctly installed and rain can get in behind the siding....

I bought every thing I needed from Home Depot, they dropped it where I told them and, I went to work, Two weeks later, I had one of the most beautiful homes in the area. I hauled everything back I didn't need and got credit for it. Thank You Home Depot.
