OK this is a problem on my homework i dont really get it. Oh yea and this is is 6th grade math yea....
Problem:
5.25-2 3/8

its a mixed number 2 as the whole number
And i have to borrow
I know this is my home work but i dont understand and i have my trumpet concert coming up soon. Please tell me step by step on how you do it thanks

You can do it one of two ways.
Way#1: Change 2 3/8 to a decimal. It becomes 2.375
Problem becomes 5.25-2.375
As you say, you now have to "borrow"
5.25= 4 + 1.250
2.375=2+ 0.375
..........-------------- Subtract
...........2.+.875
=2.875

Way#2: Make 5.25 a fraction
5.25=5 1/4
Problem now becomes 5 1/4-2 3/8
This is 21/4 - 19/8
You cannot, EVER add or subtract fractions unless
the denominators are the same.
Well, 21/4 X 2/2=42/8.
Our problem now is 42/8-19/8, =23/8, or 2 5/8

There's a third way; Stuff this problem in your trumpet, then tell your teacher you can't find your
notes!!

You can go two ways. You can convert the decimal into a fraction or convert the fraction into a decimal.

.25 = 25/100 which you can reduce to 1/4. To change a fraction to a decimal you devide the bottom number into the top number. 3 divided by 8 = .375

So take 5.250 - 2.375 or do 5 1/4 - 2 3/8. Your choice unless the problem asks you to specifically answer as a decimal or a fraction.

5 1/4- 2 3/8=

8/8=1 key to solution

use 8 as lcd
5 2/8- 2 3/8= 4 10/8-2 3/8= 2 7/8

Easiest to change the fraction to a decimal. 3/8 means 3 divided by 8 = 0.375

Now you have 5.25 - 2.375

Put a 0 at the end of 5.25 to make it easier to borrow:

5.250 - 2.375 = 2.875
