I went to the Social Security office today to ask some questions about this new work program to help disabled people go to work, & the lady was very rude. No matter what state I go to, they're rude @ the DMV, the SSA office, the post office.
I asked the lady a question & she told me, "Look @ the packet & read it. It's not our job to explain it to you. Do it yourself!" I told her I have reading comprehension problems & needed it to be explained verbally, & I had a few questions. & when I I told her about my comprehension problems, she said, "I SAID READ...THE...PACKET!!!!! We have nothing to do with that. It's YOUR problem. You handle it yourself or don't join the program at all!"
I guess I made a blank trip over there for nothing. I'm glad there wasn't a long line.

LILLIAN-No. I'm not the problem. I don't have a bad approach. I'm as nice/kind as I can be.

It's called the Federal Government Employee's Union, which is the largest, most powerful union left in the country. Once you're a federal employee & a member of this union, you have to work harder to get fired than to do you job well enough to stay employeed (essentially you're in for life or until you want to quit).
For issues with the federal beaurocracy, get in touch with you US congressman's office. Helping constituents cut through red tape is the kind of stuff that makes happy voters.
Good Luck!

Why, because there is no accountability for your actions as a government employee, no one to complain to and if there were someone, they would likely be even worse. I just got off the phone with SSA. After waiting on hold for an hour, the lady yelled at my wife and then me because she did not understand what help we needed. Finally she said "is that right" then "click" and she hung up. Great job Federal Government. And you can't figure out why the public is sick of you.....

Their hours have been cut that's why. I think the women are more bitchier there than the men are.

You & all the other answerers are correct in your assesments but I also think it's because of lack of training. In the private sector they seem to train the employees better in dealing with the public. These fed employees need 'attitude adjustment training'.

Your experience sound normal, they are getting paid to obnoxious, more ignorant butt holes in general than the last agency. They have a hard time comprehending they are working for us.

Not all of them are like that but enough of them are and it blemishes all of them. I have been in long term government government service and there is a mentality in a lot of them that they are doing you a favor by even listening half heartedly to your question or problem. They feel they are doing you a favor and your are intruding on their water cooler time to gossip with the other trolls.

I don't like to generalize but I am afraid you are correct. Not all are like that but a great majority are. It is really a shame.

I'm afraid I have to agree with you!!. Many ARE rude......of course, not all; but quite enough in my experience (and many of my friends' experiences).........since these government positions are Civil Service positions, they are quite secure and in order to get fired one would have to have commited an extremely serious offense......being merely rude to a citizen who needs help apparently does not qualify as a "serious offense" Some of these civil servants realize this and those of lower upbringing apparently enjoy taking advantage of their "power".
