SEEK A SECOND OPINION!!! A double mastectomy is absolutely not her only option. First, the cells were irregular, and he said they are the "beginning of cancer." If that is the case, there are far more options available (lumpectomy, chemo, radiation, etc.) Mutilating your mother is not something to take lightly or on first look. Have your mother go to another doctor (oncologist) and repeat the test (probably a biopsy with fine needle aspiration). If another oncologist has the same opinion, then consider the double mastectomy. Kaiser Permanente is accepted in many cities. If you are limited in your area, drive to another area for another consultation. Do not let this guy remove your mother's breasts without seeking another opinion. Good luck.
