1939 - Hitler invades Poland
1945 - Japan Surrenders

Some argue that the earlier starting Sino-Japanese war was the real start (July 7, 1937), other argue that this war was later rolled into WW2 and it was Hitler who kicked it off 1 September, 1939 by invading Poland. Britain declared war on 3 September.

Hitler was well dead and war in Europe over when the Japanese surrendered on 15 August 1945.

Well actually Hitler invaded like Czechoslovakia or something before he invaded Poland but the British and French had already met with Hitler and put together the Munich agreement basically giving Hitler the permission to invade Czechoslovakia if he promised that was the last country he invaded but when he did a couple weeks later Russia met with Hitler and they came to an agreement that neither country would object if the other decided to invade another country. That is when Hitler invaded Poland and Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand and France Declared war on Germany. That was September 3, 1939.

The United States declared war on Japan on December 8, 1941 (the day after pearl harbor) and I think it was 5 days later that Germany declared war on the United States bringing the US into the war in Europe.

The war in Europe ended on May 8th, 1945 when Germany surrendered. The South Pacific war ended on August 14th when Japan surrendered after the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
