I think if you had asked this question in, say, 6 months, a lot of people would have said Christmas! Right now, everyone is in high gear trying to finish shopping, getting the house cleaned, gifts wrapped, and attending parties. Nobody would wish to go through it all on a non-stop basis!
I like Easter. You get to dress up in your best outfit, go to church, maybe go out to eat (I used to), and it's a wonderful, beautiful day. Usually rains, though.
I would have said my birthday once upon a time. Not anymore. Today is my birthday. My fiance had to work, so Tuesday he had flowers delivered to my job, and took me out to eat after I got off work. That was really nice. Sunday, my daughter gave me a little gift when I saw her. But today, I'm going to be alone.
The best I can come up with is to go try to get some of my Christmas shopping finished. Otherwise, I'm going to be depressed. I could put the tree up, that still hasn't gotten done, and apparently he's not going to help me (I've been asking for two weeks!), but I don't really want to spend the whole day home alone.
Anyway, after careful consideration, I say my favorite holiday is Memorial Day! Nobody has to put forth the kind of work required for an "indoor" holiday (such as cleaning your house as if you're expecting a health department inspection!). Your normal level of cleanliness is fine. If I'm expecting company, I will tidy up, and clean the bathroom the day of, but the festivities are normally held outside, unless it rains. It's a much more relaxed, casual holiday. Nobody would go to a Christmas party, for instance, in shorts and flip-flops, would they? I hope not!
Memorial Day is great! Everybody has their patriotic spirit showing, there are flags everywhere, some towns have parades, and it's so nice and warm, without being unbearably hot! It's the official "opening day" of summer! What's not to like about that? It's so full of promise, you have months of sun and fun before Labor day heralds the end of it for another year.
When we were kids, we used to get out of school the Friday before Memorial Day! Remember that? 3 whole months of summer vacation, woo-hoo! Pools are open, everyone is cooking out, kids are playing outside, and the days are getting longer.
The only down-side is it's a day to honor the deceased (especially veterans), which is not a bad thing. The Saturday before, I used to make the rounds with my dad, putting flowers on everybody's grave. It was good to learn where everybody was buried, and visit the graves. Cemeteries are so pretty on Memorial Day, if you don't think about it too much. Only thing is, now, I can't afford to buy all those memorial flowers, and I have no where to store them year-to-year, like my dad did. I always go put flowers on my parents' graves, and I try to get over to Ohio to visit my husband's, but that's about as far as I can go with it.
Anyway, I would be thrilled if every day was Memorial Day! The late spring weather, the cook-outs, the flags and flowers, all of it. Gotta love it!
