After WWII ended, there were hundreds of Liberty class ships left over. These ships were build (over 2500) during the war to ship cargo from US to Europe. Most of the were bought for next to nothing by Greek entrepreneurs that were waiting for the opportunity.

The Onassis, Niarchos and Latsis families were some of the shipping magnates in the 60's. Although there are not so many shipping magnates in Greece right now, the maritime fleet is the largest in the world today, currently at 15.5%

Well, that's obviously due to the particular geographic configuration of Greece : 50 % of the country are islands, so you had to create and improve a huge ships fleet,since the Ancient Greece. There was no road by land between the continental Greece and the islands. (Cretia,Rhodos,Samos,Cyprus,etc ), so logically you hadn't any other opportunity than building ships.
Plus,your geographic location was strategic, close to Middle-East, Europe and Africa, and had some harbours in other mediterranean countries...
