i have an AMD athlon 3600 X2 brisbane Abit AN52 mobo 2 gigs mushkin 400 gig samsung ATi x1650 512 (i don't really game that much) using Xp x64 and ubuntu 7.10

would upgrading to the 5600 X2 be worth it?

also is it just me but i'm get way higher temps using Xp compared to Xp 32 bit 10C worth about

You'll get more performance but whether the extra performance would be noticed or worth the money is another matter (though if you don't need a new motherboard it probably won't be too expensive).

I wouldn't worry about the temperature your computer is reporting (assuming of course that everything is working and no smoke is coming out of your system).

I went from a similar setup. An 3600x2 to 6000x2. It's really not that much faster. I'm using Windows XP 64 bit, and the boot time wasn't noticeably faster, Firefox wasn't that much faster, etc.

The only areas I noticed were with gaming, and CPU intensive tasks such converting DVD->Xvid.

One other thing to remember: You might need a better speed of RAM to keep up with the CPU. The 6000 x2 required DDR 800.
