I am currently attending a Community College because I had no clue what I wanted to be. I have really fallen into Geology and am looking at transferring. The school down the street from my college only has a BA program but I think it would be better to go for a BS. So my question is: Whats the difference between the BA and BS in terms of career opportunities.

I have a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Performing Arts. It's not about the field of study.

Whether the degree is a BS or BA isn't determined by the field of study - it's determined by the percentage of liberal arts core required against major and applied professional requirements.

In most fields, whether you have a BA or a BS makes no difference whatsoever. What is more important is what the degree requirements were. The real difference can be as simple as whether you had to take a foreign language or not.

Bottom line; a bachelor's degree is a bachelor's degree is a bachelor's degree.

It really isn't going to matter THAT much. Honestly, if you have a bachelor's that is good enough for most places. The only thing they might look at as a factor is what your major was. I would focus on choosing the proper major for your career path and not worry about the BS or BA part.

It really just means S-sciences or A-arts.. BS is usually associated with engineering or other technical fields, BA is usually associated with business or social type fields, but to be honest a bachelor's is a bachelor's. Pick a major you love first.

I have both a BA and a BS because I could satisfy the requirements for both without to much deviation. As for me, I don't feel it's made a difference in my past or present jobs My employers just wanted someone with a college education. I think it's more important to major and minor in subjects and areas you are really interested in or would like to know more about. Honestly, if it's not a technical field or math or science you can major in just about anything and have a career in totally different field. I think it becomes more important and you need to be more specific in graduate school with graduate degrees. With all that said ,Geology is a pretty specific field which I think would lend itself more to a BS degree. Good Luck!

The only opportunity with a BA in Geology would be to teach. BS degrees offer better opportunities right out of school. BA degrees normally require that you go and get a graduate degree. There are exceptions but BS degrees are normally better.

I have a BS...and I find that I have more practical and specific knowledge in my field because my coursework was more concentrated on it. I find that is helpful, personally, because I have a wider scope within my field, but job hunting, I think a college degree/4 year doesn't matter too much if its a BS or a BA...maybe it matters more when you plan to go on to the Master's level in your field and you will have a stronger background in your field with a BS . BS = being specific, not bullshooot

It depends on whether or not you want to work in a technical field.

Getting a Bachelor of Sciences means that you've taken a requisite number of math/science/engineering classes, so if you're trying to work in a field that deals with any of that, a BS will help you out.

Conversely, a Bachelor of Arts means that you've taken mostly humanities/arts/social sciences classes. If you're looking at working in those fields, a BA might serve you better.

Good luck!

it depends on what you want to do with it. Don't worry about BA or BS. One is science, one is arts. Just choose the right course for you!
