I remember my mom used to say she hit her funny (or humerus) bone and it sure didn't seem like she was laughing. Then when I did it, I saw there was nothing funny about it. It hurts like heck. (can I say heck on here? Well if I can't, sorry, I take it back, but I couldn't think of another word to discribe the pain.)

Dang, Wally - just what have you been into today? LOL
Because of the mild pain and tingling throughout the forearm associated with an inadvertent impact of the nerve at this point, it is usually called the funny bone. (It may also have to do with its location relative to the humerus, as the name "humerus" is a homonym to the word "humorous").
You're right, ain't a daggum thing funny about hitting it!

Because Wally dear, that particular bone in medical terminology is called the Humorous and that equals "funny" - hence the term funny bone. And you are so right - when you hit it, there is absolutely nothing funny or humorous about it! CJ

It's because it's known as the "humurus" bone, even though it's spelled differently, than when it means humorous or funny. You're right, it's not funny when you hit it.

You get that funny feeling when the ulnar nerve is bumped against the humerus (say: hyoo-muh-rus), the long bone that starts at your elbow and goes up to your shoulder. Tapping your funny bone doesn't do any damage to your elbow, arm, or ulnar nerve. But it sure feels strange!
I had to research this one.

The funniest thing about the funny "bone" is that it isn't a bone at all ... it's the ulnar nerve ... i guess some "bones" just aren't bones!

Its funny to the observer. Not that I would laugh, because I can never laugh at someone getting hurt. Never. Not matter how slight the pain or injury, I cannot bring myself to laugh at someone. But, back to your question, I think others might find it amusing to see someone whack their funny bone.
Another possibility, someone whacking the funny bone while laughing.
