My parents worked at a factory when I was a kid and made decent money for the times $14/hr. The factory closed down and having no college education they were forced to work at a fast food restaurant and a gas station. They held two jobs each, worked their way through college, both got degrees, and now make $50,000 (mom) and $70,000 (dad) a year each. The process took 10 years but they did it.

What I don't get is how some people just stay in those low wage jobs? I've seen people there in their 40's and it always makes me sad that they would choose that life.

I think its wonderful that your parents were ambitious and they made it. Lots of times, life gets in the way of what we want to do and not just anyone can go to college any way. I'm not making excuses. I went to college for 2 years but I didn't graduate. I'm over 50 years old and being that age, I know things can happen that are unexpected which can prevent us from doing what we should do. Sometimes children come along when they aren't expected. Not only does it cost money to raise a child, but if you have to work and want to go to school, you have to have someone willing to watch your children for you during all those times. It just isn't always as easy as wanting to do it and having the drive. You have to have the means too. Also all people have different levels of intelligence. Not everyone can even get through college. Try not to think or judge others you see who you consider are in a menial job. There might be reasons you are unaware of, there probably are other reasons.

There are a lot of reasons. For instance, if you have a criminal record it can be very hard to get a decent job.

For me, I couldn't see my self working a high paying job. I really don't give a crap about money and am perfectly happy making just enough to get by if it means I have more time to my self. Doing serious work is to time consuming and it’s to much responsibility for something I couldn't care less about.

Lack of education and the lack of desire to get one holds a lot of people back. Your parents are to be admired for not taking a backseat to anyone and going on to better themselves for the sake of their family.

Not everyone has that kind of will or initiative.

Sad, but true, our high school drop out rate is the highest in the world among industrial nations. We are raising a coupla generations of uneducated or undereducated young people who will never be able to move out of the "flipping burgers" pay scale.

The people that stay in those jobs are too lazy to work and better themselves and would rather stick with what they know rather than get an education.
