I get a bar across the screen that says you may have spyware or adware on your computer. I also have a toolbar that appeared. I get some strange advertisements on websites too. Is this a virus? How do I get rid of it?

You have spyware. Download the free version of Superantispyware. This program will find what all others miss. Plus you will get auto updates daily. http://www.superantispyware.com

The bar saying you may have spyware or adware isnt always right. It is sort of a reminder. You have to get rid of the toolbar by right clicking it and you will have a list of toolbars and untick the one that mysteriously came up. Switch your pop up blocker on which comes with windows and set it's security to high. Also get mcafee which is great. THe problem is that is comes with a 30 day trial but thats fine because it will get rid of the adware and syware.

Sounds like the Security toolbar / Smitfraud infection. If so, this specialised removal tool (RogueFix) should take care of it:
