The Pellinor Series by Alison Croggon (or Quartet, it's four books, but they're all pretty long) 1. The Naming (In Australia, it is called The Gift) 2. The Riddle 3. The Crow 4. The Singing The series is about a girl who is "the One", but the good thing is that the author did not overdo the whole "the one" thing, but she still had to use it as a plot thing sometimes :s In the Naming, it starts with a girl who is a slave, and a Bard (people with magic in the book) goes into the slave camp to rest. He has magic spell to disguise himself, but she sees through it because she is actually a Bard as well, but never knew it. The Bard rescues her from the slave camp, and over time she develops a bunch of cool powers and stuff :P But it's actually not cheesy, it's pretty serious and I think it is written well. It is kind of a Harry Potter-ish story.

The Deptford Trilogy by Robertson Davies.
It starts with "Fifth Business," goes to "The Manticore," and ends at "World of Wonders."

All these books are written in a style I have since learned is called "magical realism," perfected by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, that great writer from Colombia.

Robertson Davies is from Canada, but he mixes it up the same way. All of these books are great, and all give a tip to theater, magic and life. That of course includes "action/fiction/little romance/whatever."

I give this little series (the books are slim) a strong recommendation.
