I need help with the opening to my essay about sun exposure, seeing as I'm useless at the beginning paragraph in essays. Anyone got any ideas on how I can start it? Thanks

I have already written the rest of the essay but thanks for the suggestion. I always find the actual content easy, it's just thinking of how to introduce it, and usually how to conclude it.
In the essay I have talked about skin cancer issues and over exposure, along with the good points of sunlight. So it's basically a balanced arguement :-)

I always start with numbers--how many people contract skin cancer each year, and how many die. There is an escalation in the number each year as well.

The companies that produce sunblock have so brainwashed the American medical profession and American consumers that a whole generation of us think sun exposure is to be shunned at all costs. Here's a little wake-up call: Rickets is on the rise. The cause? Lack of exposure to the sun, excess of soft drinks and less consumption of milk, and lack of exercise.

Start with something descriptive. It's hard to tell you since I don't know what kind of essay it is and what stance you are taking about it (fun in the sun or skin cancer). Good luck.

I recommend writing your paper first. It's easier to introduce something you've already written. Just because it's the first paragraph doesn't mean you have to write it first.

The intro should be like a funnel, very wide (general) in the beginning, with each sentence becoming more specific.

Well you need to come right out and tell your audience what your talking about. State your thesis and how you will explain it in your first paragraph, then in the rest of the paper proceed to do so.
