William Howard Taft (September 15, 1857 – March 8, 1930) was an American politician, the twenty-seventh President of the United States, the tenth Chief Justice of the United States.

William Taft.

Trained as a lawyer, he served in a variety of prosecutorial and judicial posts before becoming President. After his presidency ended in 1913, he was appointed the Chancellor Kent Professor of Law and Legal History at Yale Law School. In 1921, when Chief Justice Edward Douglass White died, President Harding nominated Taft for the job. The Senate unanimously confirmed Taft, and he served as Chief Justice until 1930.
