The 5th Element is the spirit or soul (and is not normally referred to). The 4 major elements (earth, air, fire, water) are most often discussed.

Ed (ps: I liked the movie ;)

The fifth 'element' of ancient science was the aether, see the reference. This one persisted into the 19th century as the luminiferous aether, once considered to be the medium for the propagation of light. Many generations of science have come along since then. We now consider the propagation of electromagnetic energy to be a property of spacetime. Hopefully, your mom told you the tree in order to motivate you to find the real answer.

The fifth element is the "essence" of an object. In objects the "idea" of the object, in humans perhaps "soul" carries the idea the ancient Greek were trying to express. Supposedly the underlying fundemental idea of something is what determines the form and proportions of the four other elements.

IN modern English the fifth element has its own word, quintessence, showing the root for five (quint), and the word essence, in the sense of being necessary or essential to it.

Boron is the fifth element.

You and your mother need to come into the real world. The real world is more than fascinating enough with all the problems to solve and and mysteries to consider.
