Turner managed to rehabilitate his image somewhat in his later years, touring around the globe with his band the Kings of Rhythm and drawing critical acclaim for his work. He won a Grammy in 2007 in the traditional blues album category for "Risin' With the Blues."

But his image is forever identified as the drug-addicted, wife-abusing husband of Tina Turner. He was hauntingly portrayed by Laurence Fishburne in the movie "What's Love Got To Do With It," based on Tina Turner's autobiography.

Yes, heard it on my way home from work. Tina has always been 'my girl' and quite frankly, Ike was even worse in real life than in the movie depicting his life with Tina.

However, he came the closest ever [without full confession] to saying he was sorry shortly before he died.

What I didn't know was that his first song which he wrote was considered to be the lst Rock and Roll song...1951 as I remember they said. 76 he was! Had no idea he was that old.

No I haven't had the TV or radio on. And it wasn't on my home
page for news either. I actually thought he'd already died. I
hadn't heard of him in years.
I remember the gossip mags back when. And the pictures
of Tina being beaten up with black eyes and broken nose.
I believed her, because there was nothing he said in his
defense that I can remember reading about. She destroyed
his career as soon as the news hit the streets. No one likes
an abuser. And no one let him defend himself. He'd admitted
he had been on drugs at one time then. So everyone went
along with Tinas' accusations. We knew, she hadn't done
that much harm to herself, in an accident even. Or maybe he
was too strung out, and didn't remember hurting her. What-
ever the case, his career and hers, hit a nose dive. And tho
years later, she pulled herself back again, the greatness
just wasn't there for me. They had been great together, but
alone, I just couldn't 'feel' it anymore.
It was kind of the same, when Sonny and Cher separated
and divorced. She went on to further stardom and was onstage as well. But to me, she went over the top with her
marriages and scandals. And she stopped being the class
act I'd known her to be before. She could still wear the Bob
Mackie gowns, but there was something missing. And when
she had her face done more and more, well to me, she had
really lost it. Even tho she continued to make even more
money, she just wasn't the same as before. And who's to say,
maybe that was good. The new image, I mean. But for me,
I wanted the old Cher back. Bump on the nose, and all. And
I wanted the old Tina and Ike back as well.

Talented man. No one really knows what goes on between a man a woman except maybe the two involved. Even then sometimes after a few years we can look back and see a lot of things differently. It takes two to tango.

I still like to put on vintage Tina and Ike. It is amazing that they were able to create something lasting and beautiful from something ugly. Ike is a good example of how some people create wonder and then marr if by their personal lives. pete rose, marion jones, richard nixon, edward meecham, o.j. simpson, alberto gonzales, michael vick, to name a few.
Rest in Peace IKE.

Honestly, I had never heard of him until this moment, but that picture of him touched my heart. I don't know why, but I feel like he was my idol or something. So sad to hear of someone dying. Even if you don't know them, you can still feel sympathy for them.
RIP Ike Turner. He looked like a great man.

Edit: Okay apparently he beat up his wife? Maybe he wasn't that great, but it's still sad. Okay so I'll admit it. I didn't read any of the article except that he died this morning and the picture of him. So he was a bad person, but...he looked happy?

Yup - I actually saw it on www.perezhilton.com.

Aside from the drug abuse and the horrid marriage to Tina, he did do interesting things in the music world. Hopefully that is what he will be remembered for.

Saw Ike and Tina in concert in college ... loved their music. A very volatile man, but a great performer.

My first thought was, I'll bet Jane Fonda is feeling pretty sad right now. Thank goodness I looked at the question a little closer.

I didn't hear about it until you posted this.
