This REALLY bothers me and I want to know if it bothers the other vet techs out there: when you are assisting the Vet with an exam, trying to hold/restrain the pet, and the owner is hovering over their pet, and won't let you hold them at all? It's like they think they can do a better job? Don't they know it's our JOB to help the vet during an exam, I mean why else would we be right there in the exam room, DUH?! Let me know your opinion on this! Please!

I know exactly how you feel. They don't understand that we are not LEGALLY aloud to let them hold their animals because we are liable for any injuries that occur to them. Often times they will actually cause the dog to become aggressive because many loyal dogs are protective of their owners. I think there needs to be an FYI posted at vets explaining our liabilities and why we can't let people hold, why we can't allow the in surgery ect. I find that when I explain that the animals are calmer and they they have an instinct to protect their owners that can cause them to become aggressive they are often more understanding. (though we have a few that won't yeild even then) when you explain the whole protective thing I think owners feel a small amount of pride that their pet is that loyal. Hope my input helps ya out in the future. As a sign hanging in our lab says Not all people who are crazy own pets, but all pet owners are crazy! lol so true, I know I'm crazy when it comes to my babies!

I totally agree. Luckily my vet usually tells the owner " Why don't you let my assistant restrain, we don't want "fluffy" to look at you as the bad guy"
But if the vet doesn't say something then I usually do, because I can't do my job otherwise.

You know, that is one of the reasons that I left private practice and work at a shelter. I could NOT stand the people anymore!!!
One day we were trying to get blood out of a Yorkie, and had to wrestle the dog AND the owners FAKE BOOBS.....which the dog was wedged in between. That was close to the LAST straw.
I like the shelter....it is quiet!!!!!!!

And you know...they don't let you hover over your KID like that at the peds office!!!!!!!

I agree, when i'm in the room with the vet. I hate when the owners are being like that.

I can see where you are coming from, but I can also see the other side. I used to be one of those overprotective "mothers" when it came to shots or other even minimally invasive procedures. Now I am on the other side and I am learning that sometimes, like with human children, it may be best to have the pet's human wait in the other room, but not in all cases.

The way you need to look at it is that these people love their pets and honestly they may do a better job then you because the animal knows them not you.

aLL I know is that is anyone other then me holds our cat for her shots she is mean and nasty and if I hold her she just sits there and takes it. It all depends on the animal
