My science teacher says lithology, is that right? i know the study of minerals is mineralology.

Geology is the study of Earth and all its processes, not just rocks.

Petrology is the study of rocks in general.

There's igneous petrology, metamorphic petrology, and sedimentary petrology.

Lithology is the study of how rocks form layers and how sediments become rocks.

As far as I know it is geology, the study of rocks & minerals.
Lithology is a branch of geology which studies rock formation.

The study of rocks in general is petrology.
Lithology a subdivision of petrology focusing on macroscopic hand-sample or outcrop-scale description of rocks.
The detailed study of rocks by looking at the microscopic character is called petrography.

it is the only history book available for teaching us about the earth and how it came to be what it is. In a more specific sense, there are a lot of practical reasons for understanding rocks. Construction, resource needs, public safety, and so on. Why does anyone study anything?

that is correct, although it is also called petrology. lithology focuses on the study of rocks and the conditions on which they form. the general study of rocks is geology though.
