You need an ISP (Internet Service Provider) to get any Internet to your house, via the phone socket and you need a wireless router (plugged into the phone socket) to get that Internet connection to your laptop (provided your laptop is wireless capable)

You need to either have Internet service or connect to an unsecured wireless network, the router is not necessarily for a laptop, the wireless card however goes into the PC slot of the laptop to make it wireless

No, no ISP is needed.
just go somewhere where there is a signal.
these places have them,
McDonalds,Starbucks,Librarys,and pretty much any place where you see the WI-FI sign.
But read the manuels that came with the Wireless Adapter

you have to have an ISP. Your paying for the ability to use a "real" IP address.
