Isn't the only reason people support torture and cruelty to other people because of an animal instinct to hurt others?

And given that, what is it, exactly, that makes us so superior to other animals on this planet?

Sorry, but animals don't have morals and they don't torture other animals or people. Animal instinct is to survive and all their actions are geared toward that. Most animals flee when confronted with life and death situations. Although we may be animals, with humans you have something that is far more brutal than nature and far more psychological going on. It comes down to very psychological issues of power and sheer joy in seeing another human being (or an animal) suffer. Some people have much more inclination toward this than most. It's a kind of psychosis or sociopathic behaviour. However, this kind of behaviour is definitely not natural or animalistic. The fact that our government o.k's this kind of psychotic sociopathic behaviour is extremely disturbing and completely morally wrong. Especially in light of the fact that it is totally illegal according to our laws and the laws of the Geneva convention.

While I don't support waterboarding, there really isn't any logical connection between that and animal instinct. First of all, if waterboarding was used what makes you think it would be used for some sort of sadistic pleasure? Normally torture is used as an interrogation method to try and gain information. That would have nothing to do with "animal instinct to hurt others." Also, what makes you think there is an animal instinct that makes them attack and torture each other? That sort of behavior is almost never seen in the animal kingdom. Animals are interested in survival, that is how they are programmed. They do not have an instinct for sick, sadistic pleasures.

The fox does not negotiate with the rabbit. If he can catch him he eats him even if he isn't hungry. No questions. We ask the question and if the answer is not given then waterboarding is just a negotiating tool. I know it is frightening to think about, but our civilization is eggshell thin. National security basically means keeping our country safe. If negotiation can do that wonderful. If not we do what we must do to ensure our survival. No country is innocent. All countries are guilty. After all of the highly moralistic jargon is passed around it is still true that the country with the biggest stick will out

I would also point out that we are the only animal who cares about the welfare of other animals at all. Except for my dog Otis who I am sure loves me - or is it just thai I feed him and he is smart enough to know which side his bread is buttered on. We have to deal with the world as it is and try little by little to make it what we want it to be.

If a guy wants to kill me and my family I say waterboarding is a relatively soft response. In fact I will pour the water.

Well to answer your second question what makes us superior is our brain and the ability to use it.
As for your first question, you call those who torture, animals when in fact the animals are those being tortured, you know? those who wear no uniform belong to no nation and have no problem cutting heads off and blowing up buildings or being suicide bombers? I suppose you think these are humans?
You have no problem eating meat i suppose well gee you are probably a cruel animal to allow killing cows and chicken so you can feed yourself. Well the apple don't fall far from the tree. I know i won't get the best answer ... it is OK. I rather be right. Good day.

Show me any animal that is capable of waterboarding first.

Yeah, what makes us "so superior" to other creatures is the human brain and its ability to handle abstract concepts like good and bad, right or wrong. Thus, by you asking this question you are proving that humans are better than animals, which nicely then contradicts your own question.

No. What proves we're no better than animals is the ragheads who decapitate people on TV! But the rad-libs never criticize them, do they? Waterboarding doesn't do any lasting damage. And if it gets the bad guys to talk and saves American lives, I say "Bring it on!"

Even animals don't have an instinct to hurt others - they hunt for food and become territorial for survival.
I fail to see the parallel between waterboarding and the tactics commonly used by the Islamic radicals. I don't believe that there many people who support torture for the mere act of inflicting pain on another - I suspect it's more in line with the safety and security of the American people and an intended result of perhaps preventing another 9/11.
