You may have too many unnecessary startups. Disable them to free up RAM.
Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, ok. Select Startup tab. Disable the unnecessary ones, apply, ok. PC will restart.
Consider upgrading RAM especially if ddr2. They are so cheap these days.

RAM is volatile memory, meaning it takes electricity to store information, and as soon as you shut your computer off what ever is in RAM is lost.
However, the quickest way to make your computer run faster is by controlling what get loaded into RAM when your computer starts. If your using windows hold alt+ctrl and press delete, this will bring up the task manager. Click on the processes tab. These are all the processes that are loaded in your RAM, taking up space, and using the processor. In KB, so divide by 1,000 and you get MB's. If you see a lot of processes listed, that is why your computer is slow, because they are all using the processor creating lag.
Anyways, to control what processes are loaded when your computer starts, click on start run and type in "msconfig" with out quotes. If ur using vista you can just type it in the start search box. Once you do this the system configuration is going to pop up. Go over to the startup tab, all the startup items that are checked load when your PC boots up and they get loaded into RAM and use the processor, some are not necessary. You can disable some of them, you can even try disabling all of them, and see how fast your computer is when you restart it. However, some of the start up items are needed, such as your printer driver.
So as far as going about which ones you want to start when your computer starts, all the ones that are names of programs you can be pretty safe to uncheck. If you have a printer and one of them contains the name of ur printer, leave it checked or else your printer will not work because the driver won't get loaded.
It's okay if you don't really know what your doing when you do this, because it isn't going to "break" anything and once you restart yourr computer you can always bring it back up and re-check ones that you need and/or uncheck ones you don't.
So, basically play around with the startup, or list what shows up under the start up tab and i'll try and explain a little bit more.
Things you DO NOT want to disable, would be like your wireless card manager, adobe acrobat, quick time, java platform, your antivirus if you have one installed. Things like iTunes can be disabled, AOL instant messenger, ect. By disabling something you can still use it just as you normally would, it just doesn't load the process until you open the program.
DO NOT mess with anything under the services tab.
Also, you can try uninstalling unused programs from the control panel. Increasing your virtual memory, which is part of the hard drive that acts as RAM, can also give a little bit of a speed increase by giving ur PC the illusion it has more RAM then it does. To do this right click on my computer, go to properties, a window will pop up, go to advanced, performance, then click on settings, then another window is going to pop up, click the advanced tab, then it will say virtual memory and have a change button, you can change it to a bigger value if you wish.
Hope that helps solves your problem.

The RAM is a card with a bunch of circuits, in your laptop that stores temporary memory which holds data on programs you're currently using while logged on as well as where you surf. Once you shut down, it clears everything out unlike your hard drive which stores data permanently until you erase it yourself. The RAM can be thought of a shortcut to speed things up as it would take forever if your system had to to constantly keep going through the hard drive for everything. It's not going to erase your installed programs either.

Ya needs ta larn sum basik stuff 'bout yer electonic gizmo there fella.
Fer instanse, that-thar RUM er, RAM stands fer Random Access Memory, an' it don' have nuttin' ta do with speed.
Ya didn't tell us, WHAT YA GOT, so how can us perfessionils halp ya.
Ah'll reckon that everthin' is hunky-dory an' give ya some advise, first,
1. When loading a program (it goes into RAM first), be sure that you don't have too much left in memory, check the Taskbar (bottom of your screen).
2. Do a DEFRAG on your HDD (Hard Disk Drive), to help your CPU (Central Processing Unit, Microprocessor, Brains) find and execute the program you are loading.
3. Increase the amount of RAM on your MOBO (Motherboard), if you do, put in the correct memory cards.
;-)

You can get free programs to clear out and optimize RAM, so you just install and let it do it's thing. However personally it's best just to go out and by some more ram, it's so cheap anyway.

you can't clear out your RAM dude! the only way is turning off the computer :)
and ofcourse clearing up the RAM has nothing to do with the speed of your PC. the problem is you have not enough RAM installed on your pc or you are running many applications at a time (on taskbar for example) or you may want clear up your hard disk alitte
the way is adding more ram modules on your motherborad or changing whole RAM modules with the kinds with higher bus speeds

TRY another way
1) start > all programs > accessories > run
2) type "temp" and press enter (shows temporary files )
3) press "ctrl + a" and press "delete"
4) go back to run and type " %tmp% " (shows other temporary files)
5) do the same thing... go ahead delete it
6) enjoy
temporary files too are stored in RAM (random access memory )

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com
It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.
