Yes, why?

It was John Kerry who brought the subject into debate by releasing his "Band of Brothers" photo and saying that his fellow Swift Boat officers stood behind him.

I guess he hoped no-one would actually speak to them, because when they were interviewed, 3 said they supported him, 2 were dead, 1 refused to comment, 1 couldn't be found, and 12 said he was unfit.

Of more importance, IMHO, than his service in VN was the "Winter Soldier" hearings after Kerry got into Congress. One can't be surprised at any politician "puffing up" his military career for votes, but Kerry performance in "Winter Soldier" was SO bad it truly shows horrible judgment.

Kerry, along with the other organizers - Mark Lane and Jane Fonda - put several "Vietnam Veterans" up to testify to the Congressional Committee to war crimes and atrocities that they'd supposedly seen or committed themselves in VN. Those of us who're old enough to remember them will remember every night this parade of ex-soldiers talking about the kids they killed or seen killed, the villages burned, atrocity after atrocity. The trouble of course was that it turned out that Kerry had taken these people at face value without checking them out, then represented them to the committee as being verified VN vets, which, as we found out much later, most of them weren't.

When the NCIS tracked down the witnesses so as to attempt to get their testimony for possible criminal trials, they discovered that 11 of the witnesses who gave the most damning testimony had never been in the military at all, and that several of the other witnesses, when met with, had never testified at Detroit at all - anti-war protestors had simply used the names of real vets and Kerry etc never checked any ID's

Of those who were real ex-military and had actually been at the hearings, some had never really been to Vietnam, some had been there but only in support functions on base where they could never have seen what they claimed to have.

Only a tiny fraction turned out to be real VN combat vets, and the only allegations of atrocities that could be verified were all cases that had already been reported on in the press, and prosecuted.

pretty boring for a fiction novel

edit

i believe the account of those who served with him over those above him any day - often times the best officers are the most hated by the upper command - those who look out for their troops instead of trying to kiss *** and impress the chain of command.
