It depends on what is in the water, waves, plankton, algae, soil erosion, etc and what angle the sun is hitting the water but it can be hundreds of feet before it is totally dark.

Geomatic is a clever girl and is completely correct.

All the sea life that mankind has ever witnessed has always lived within the first 600 feet from the surface of the ocean.

It was not until the last few decades when scientists and engineers invented the bathysphere and we were able to witness life forms which do not depend upon the sun for life.

All the life forms living below that 200 meter limit must receive life giving elements and compounds dropping down from deceased life forms within the first 600 feet of ocean depth!
