I just found out that Bryant Gumbel will NOT be doing the play-by-play this Thursday night for the NFL Network's Thursday night game...he says because he is sick...yeah.

I wish they would replace him full time with someone else...I am anxious to see how Tom does in his place.

What do you think?

my prayers have been answered. He was all whiny and snotty last week. It grossed me out.

I personally think sick is just an excuse. After Gumbel completly destroyed the Packers/Cowboys game, the NFL Network wants to get rid of him and is letting people do live interviews for the job. They're just saying he's sick so Gumbel can save a little face. By next season he won't be the play-by-play guy for them.

Our local AM radio guy does play by play for high school games better then the NFL network does professional games.

Anything would be an improvement.

What was the question?
Did you mean: "Can this only be a good thing?"
I'm only harping on this because my question (which WAS phrased as a question) got deleted for "chatting".

Now to what I think was your question:
Wes, it is a good thing. Bryant Gumbel is NOT a sportscaster like his brother Greg. Bryant is a newscaster.
Big difference.
Reminds me of the Dennis Miller failure on MNF.

Gumbell is pretty bad, but not as bad as the MNF bozos! I ususally turn the tv to mute and play audio tapes of my root canal.

Agreed!

I'm a Broncos fan, I was not looking forward to being lulled to sleep by Gumbel.

Plus, he's got that Jeff Van Gundy "I slept under a rock" look about him lately.

Hammond will be fine, no problem there.

I prefer more sedate commentary. I always thought Dan Fouts did a nice job.

YEAH, GUMBLE SUCKS... HIS VOICE IS LIKE NAILS TO A CHALKBOARD, AND AS BAD OF AN ALCOHOLIC AS PAT SUMMERALL WAS ON THE AIR, AT LEAST HE KNEW THE TEAMS AND PLAYERS PLAYING.... BUT, PAT IS A HALL-OF-FAME-BROADCASTER.... YOU'D DRINK TOO IF JOHN MADDENING WAS YAPPING IN YOUR EAR...
