6.5 months is a bit young. Try again at 8 months.

At that age, it's difficult for a baby to actually get food in his mouth, not to mention most experts agree only breastmilk or formula until 6 months, then start with rice cereal.
If you want to let your child play with foods and attempt to eat on his own, that's fine. Stick with soft cooked veggies like green beans, smashed peas, carrots, chunks of baked pumpkin or squash. As for fruits, small pieces of non-allergenic and mild ones, such as bananas, peaches, and apricots. Cook the peaches or apricots so they're softer, if you'd like, and monitor his eating closely in case he chokes.
As for the teething biscuits mentioned below, it's NOT a good idea! He is too young for wheat products! If he tolerates rice cereal, oatmeal and barley, there are wheat-free biting biscuits on the market.
Check out this website; they have great ideas on what foods to introduce and when, recipes, and general baby food guidelines.
Ok, teether biscuits ARE ok, just not yet. Introducing these foods early is risky. Food allergies can be avoided if we proceed slowly introducing foods. Also, doctors do NOT know everything!! Do your own research.

I just tried the teething biscuits, then small chunks of banana....she didn't do well until about 8 months she started on crackers, the cheerios, now its boiled potatoes and carrots, and overly cooked noodles, soft french fries with the ends bitten off. Once she was able to handle these foods, more and more she's becoming disgusted by baby foods.

The Gerber graduates foods....
Try the zwieback toast... biter biscuits are good for that age.
I'd wait another month or so before you introduce the smaller fingerfoods.

I don't think I gave either of my children finger foods at that age. I don't think either of them could pick them up, no pincer grip yet. I did start when they were about 8 months and some good things are ...
-banana pieces (cover them in crushed rice krispies, easier to pick up!)
- cheerios
- tofu
- small pasta pieces
- small pieces of small, ripe fruits
Or things they can pick up without having pincer grip:
- crackers
- toast
- teething biscuits
- orange slices
Someone below me said teether biscuits are not OK. I can only speak for myself, my son's doctor told me that Gerber Biter Biscuits were OK for both of my kids. I tend to listen to my doctor, all you can do is ask your doctor in your specific case!
