The best bike on the road is what is best for whoever is riding it. It's important not have too much bike, or too cheap a bike if you use it daily. The BMW sleds are very well put together. I had an 900 when I was stationed in Germany. Thing had almost 200,000 kilometers on it when I got it, and I got it pretty cheap. It smoked a bit, and used a bit of oil, but it was a fine bike, and just the right size for me at the time.
No doubt in my mind that all the BMW's are rated right up there in reliability and rideability. As a matter of fact, my thoughts on the matter are the BMW is the best blend of H-D and Japanese. H-D for size and comfort, and Japanese for reliability. I stick with my guns though on the the best bike being the one that fits you best, and that you feel good on.
I had just graduated from a 650 rice burner, and since I did not ride the BMW every day, (And never in the winter like some of them crazy European bike riders, and even some people up north!) it gave me time to get used to it. Came back to the states ready for my first hog, a 1200 Sporty.
The reason I say the best bike is one that fits the rider is, had I gotten the hog right off the bat I would be sending this answer from the nether reigions. I would be in a box in the ground with dirt in my face. I think the best bike is what I'm riding now. A FXDWG with a TC-88. That may be some persons idea of a nightmare bike! Especially if they are small and light and can't make 700 pounds do what they want it to do. If I had to go back to something smaller, that would be my nightmare since I'm over six foot tall and have a 36 inch inseam. A small bike hurts my hips on long trips which is why I don't anything with mid controls anymore.

That is a good street bike with limited dual sport capabilities. It like most street orientated dual sports is really too big for any serious off road riding. (unless you're built like Arnold Swartzenegger)
However if the majority of your riding is on street and gravel, not single track trails, It is the perfect bike. Like all BMWs it is very dependable.

All vehicles are compromises. There is no "best" motorcycle. You have to qualify that, best in what?
Handling, stopping distance, maximum lean angle, gas mileage, acceleration, maintenance cost, comfort, style, retained value, safety, tire wear, weather protection, warranty, dealer network, headlight brightness, electrical system output ...
Those are independent qualities and no one bike win's 'em all. To be honest I am disappointed with BMW in recent years for the price. I owned a 2001 R1200C and that machine spent too much time in the shop time getting warranty repairs. In the "oilhead" generation of engines they denied surging until they fixed it (dual plugs). And in the most recent Iron Butt rally they had too many rear drive failures.

Mine. Second best: my other one.
Just had to agree with everyone else.
Best has a different meaning for each person you ask, because we all do things differently. Or do different things with them.
Apparently an r1150gs is best for you.

Goldwings are the best in my opinion but I would probably get a st1300 because they are alittle sprotier.
