I fail to understand why people tell you they don't know anymore about the subject than you do and then go about giving you inaccurate information.
Yes, that is a wonderful list of "Big" Publishing companies. However it will do you not a lick of good because NONE of them accept unsolicited queries from authors. Want to be ignored? Send them your book. It will end up in a slush room never to be seen or heard from again. Only A List Agents can contact A List Publishers. You require an agent to contact one of them for you.
You need to ask Santa for a copy of Writers Market. Then read it front to back. Don't make it a big paperweight on your desk. It will give you a lot of information.
Self publishing is not the answer. No self published books get sold in stores. If you self publish - expect to sell about 2/3 as many books as you have family and friends - or roughly 100 copies.
If you believe in yourself and in your manuscript, you owe it to yourself to spend at least twice as long trying to get it published traditionally as you did writing it. That means learning how publishing works. The author Nicholas Sparks offers a wonderful tutorial on his website. It is very educational.
If you go to my profile, you will find I star all good Q and A on publishing. That is so new authors can go through the answers without wading through Harry Potter and Twilight questions. Many successful authors have come here and posted excellent answers. Skim through them and print out some you think will help you.
BUT my dead - you are jumping the gun. Until you have a completed manuscript that has been revised at least twice and edited, you have nothing to show a publisher or agent.

Most publishers have specialties. Some do only romance, others do mysteries, etc.
The really big ones do everything, but they don't take on writers who never published before.
You will need to go to one of the smaller publishers that specialize in the kind of book you have.
Writer's Market has lists in catagories, along with each publisher's requirements for submitting a manuscript.
I would mention the posibility of going to a self-publishing company, if that works for you---but my associate Charie would immediately post an answer telling you to stay away from such companies.
Seriously, though, self-publishing is not for you if you want your book sold in bookstores.
Anyway, If you are serious about writing, you should join a writers group, and go to some writers conferences. That's how to meet people in the business.

I'm sort-of in the same boat as you: I'm currently writing a novel and hoping to get it published. So you have a few options when it comes to publishing.
Big companies: Scholastic, Random House, Simon and Scheuster, DoubleDay, etc.
Smaller companies: I don't know a lot of these, but try Googling.
Self-Publishing.
Hope this helps and hope you get published.

Well, there aren't any publishers who'll offer to publish a book that doesn't exist - not unless the person whose name is going on the front is someone who can't walk down the street without being recognised. So tell your friend to get on with writing. Once the book is finished, any publisher would be delighted to publish it - if they thought they could make a profit by doing so. It's very unusual for them to think that about books written by 14-year-olds, but don't let mean old me stop you from trying. You need to write about a million words for practice before you're capable of writing something that's worth paying for. The sooner you start, the sooner you'll be done with that. If your friend wants to write on the assumption that she'll get published, she should probably find something else to do with her spare time. Most books don't earn enough money to justify the amount of time the author spent writing them. (I used to say "most books don't get published", but the rise of self-publishing is changing that. Most self-published books still don't earn a lot of money, though.)

There are so many good publishers it would be impossible to list them all here. Go get a book called "Writer's Market". All publishers are listed in it. Their contact info, their requirements for submissions, the types of books they publish - everything. That's the place professional writers go for this info.
Good luck on getting it published!
